Great Teams Win Big

The Cubs received a poor start from John Lackey Thursday night, but still won by eight runs. They defeated the Diamondbacks 14-6, all six Arizona runs charged to Lackey. My definition of a big win is a margin of victory of five runs or more. All three Cubs wins so far met that criteria.

Thursday night the Cubs tested the hypothesis that if you never make an out, you score an infinite number of runs. They collected 14 hits, 10 walks, and a hit by pitch. That works out to an OBP of .481 for the game. For the season, the team batting line stands at .298/.394/.526. An individual player posting that line might win an MVP.

The only negative was the injury to Kyle Schwarber:

Schwarber will have an MRI on Friday after colliding with Fowler in the outfield. Initial results showed no break in his left ankle, but the MRI will reveal more about his knee as well. Jorge Soler will be thrust into a starting role if Schwarber has to spend any time on the disabled list.

The Cubs offense is so deep they can afford to replace Schwarber with Soler and not lose too much.
