They Shall Inherit the Runners

The Cubs staged a comeback against the Reds bullpen to pullout a 5-3 victory Monday night, wasting a great pitching performance by Brandon Finnegan. He left the game wit two out in the seventh and runners on first and second after allowing his first hit of the evening and a walk. Caleb Cotham came on and walked the next batter. Tony Cingrani came on and gave up a two-run single, but preserved the lead.

Cingrani then got in trouble in the eighth. With one out he got wild, walking a batter, uncorking a wild pitch, and hitting a batter. That set up Jumbo Diaz for an Addison Russell three-run homer. Home runs are Diaz’s weak spot, having given up 13 in his 99 2/3 major league innings.

The Cubs win again, and at 6-1 own the best record in the NL. The Reds are off to a surprisingly good start, but the lack of depth in the bullpen hurt Monday night.
