Vincent Velasquez and the Phillies shut out the Padres Thursday afternoon 3-0, Velasquez going the distance for the win. Traded away by the Astros in what appears to be a mistake for that team, Velasquez is off to a hot start. He struck out nine Mets in six innings in his first start of the season. Thursday, he struck out 16 without walking a batter, holding the Padres to three hits. His line for the season stands at 2-0, 15 innings, six hits, three walks, and 25 strikeouts. Wow.
Note that this start meets the Bill James standard of signature significance. Great pitchers tend to pitch games like this. That trade is looking like a steal for the Phillies.
The Padres have now been shut out five times in ten games.
