Games of the Day

The Angels continue their series with the Twins as Parker Bridwell faces Ervin Santana. Looking at Bridwell’s three true outcomes, I have to believe he’s either been very lucky or had some great defense behind him. His walk rate is excellent, but he allowed seven home runs in 27 1/3 innings. He struck out just 14 batters, contact helping opponents to 33 hits. His FIP stands at 6.44. Santana pitched great until June. Last month he posted a 6.03 ERA, allowing nine home runs in 34 1/3 innings.

Jason Vargas leads the AL in the ERA by about 0.4 runs as he leads the Royals against Seattle and Ariel Miranda. Vargas makes an attempt to win 13 games before the All-Star break. He doubled his season win total in June, going 6-0 with a 1.98 ERA. He allowed 36 hits in 41 innings last month, despite striking out just 23 batters. Miranda allowed 18 home runs in 99 innings, but with a low OBP allowed, 12 of those were solo shots.

Finally, the best match-up of the day sees the Diamondbacks trying to gain ground on the Dodgers as Zack Godley tries to smite Alex Wood. Most of Godley’s ten starts have been heavenly, as he has yet to allow more than three runs in a game this season. Wood has yet to lose this year, 8-0 as a starter and 1-0 as a reliever. He is one of the best three-true outcome pitchers in the majors right now, with 87 Ks, 20 BB, and 2 HR in 73 2/3 innings.

Enjoy!
