Wood a Ten

Zack Godley and Alex Wood produced the pitching duel of the day as the Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 1-0. Chris Taylor singled in the second, and Yasmani Grandal drove him home from first with a double for the only run. That was enough to push Alex Wood’s record to 10-0.

Wood struck out ten and walked two in seven innings, lowering his ERA to 1.67. He’s six innings shy of qualifying for the NL ERA lead, currently held by Max Scherzer at 1.94.

Wood allowed just two home runs in his 80 2/3 innings, remarkable in a year when the ball is flying out of the park at rates seldom seen before. He became an even more extreme ground ball pitcher this season, 65.5% of his balls in play on the ground, and just 15% going for line drives. He does not throw a four-seam fastball, just the sinking two seamer. So far, it’s working quite well. We’ll see how much he works his way into the Cy Young race in the second half of the season.

The Dodgers now lead the NL West by 4 1/2 games as they start to pull away from the division.
