Weekly Look at Offense

Week three-plus of the regular season saw the highest scoring of the season as games broke the 9.0 runs per game average barrier. MLB games averaged 9.21 runs per game. For the season, games are averaging 8.83 runs per game, compared to 8.42 through the first three weeks of 2017. (All comparisons are through three weeks in each season.) Home runs remain down, 2.1 per games this season compared to 2.3 per game in 2017. Walks remain way up, 7.1 per games in 2018, 6.5 per games in 2017. Combined with a rise in non-home run hits, there is over one more batter on base per game, 24.5 per game this season, 23.4 last year.

The overall increase in hits is strange, since strikeouts are way up. There are 17.8 per game compared to 16.4 last season. If I had to explain these changes, I would say that batters are willing to wait for their pitch, and they are killing the ball when they get it.
