A friend alerted me to the fact that batters struck out more times in the month of April than they recorded hits. This would be the first full month (April-September) where that happened. Here are the months with the lowest K rates from 1969 on, the era of the lower mound and division play:
Month | Season | Bat. Hits | Strikeouts | Diff |
April | 2018 | 4696 | 5023 | -327 |
April | 2017 | 6185 | 6047 | 138 |
Sept. | 2017 | 7143 | 6941 | 202 |
April | 2016 | 5951 | 5710 | 241 |
April | 1995 | 1175 | 825 | 350 |
July | 2017 | 6619 | 6268 | 351 |
Sept. | 2016 | 7025 | 6667 | 358 |
May | 2017 | 7319 | 6932 | 387 |
July | 2016 | 6546 | 6087 | 459 |
April | 2014 | 6639 | 6172 | 467 |
Aug. | 2017 | 7377 | 6906 | 471 |
Sept. | 2014 | 6526 | 5988 | 538 |
April | 2015 | 5536 | 4961 | 575 |
Sept. | 2013 | 6943 | 6356 | 587 |
June | 2017 | 7333 | 6744 | 589 |
May | 2016 | 7373 | 6726 | 647 |
April | 2013 | 6679 | 5992 | 687 |
Sept. | 2015 | 7291 | 6591 | 700 |
Note that most of these months occurred in the last few years. April 1995 was a very short month due to the late end of the labor stoppage the previous season. Low differences also seem to happen in April.
The batters have a few days left in the month, maybe they can catch up.
