Checkered One Hitter

Patrick Corbin pitched a nearly flawless game as the Diamondbacks defeated the Giants 1-0 Tuesday night. All the action happened in the eighth inning.

What began on a sour note for the Diamondbacks and their starting rotation Tuesday turned into a sensationally sweet performance by Patrick Corbin, who came within four outs of pitching the third no-hitter in franchise history.

The left-hander didn’t allow a hit against the San Francisco Giants until the eighth inning at Chase Field, when left-handed-hitting Brandon Belt squibbed a grounder toward a vacant third base with the Diamondbacks employing a full-on defensive shift.

Daniel Descalso raced back to field the ball and tried to throw out Belt at first base, but his throw was not in time. The crowd of 19,669 rose to its feet to give Corbin a standing ovation.

Corbin walked one and struck out eight for the shutout. He worked efficiently, throwing just 100 pitches, 68 for strikes.

Johnny Cueto was nearly as effective, pitching seven shutout innings. He allowed two hits and struck out 11. Tony Watson, however, allowed a hit and a walk in the eighth inning:

The fans were cheering even wilder in the bottom half of the inning when Jarrod Dyson drew a one-out walk off Giants reliever Tony Watson, Corbin moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and David Peralta drove Dyson home with a single to center.

Small ball wins a nail biter! The game took just 2:05. Once again, low scoring well pitched games lead to faster playing times, but that’s not what I think the commissoner’s office wants.

The Diamondbacks, at 12-4, are tied with the Mets for the best record in the National League.
