Long Days

Wednesday feature three extra-inning games, two of them going deep into extra innings. The Indians and Twins appeared to not want to leave Puerto Rico as they played 16 innings with little action as the Twins won 2-1. The White Sox and Athletics played 14 innings with lots of action as the Athletics walked off with a 12-11 win. The Giants beat the Diamondbacks 4-3 in ten innings to complete the free baseball day. There were 13 games, 13 extra innings for an average of 10 innings a game.

Going back to 1974 (because the query is easy), the day wit the highest average innings per game (min. 10 games played) was on 9/11/1974. That was the day of the 25 innings duel between the Cardinals and the Mets. There was also a 17 inning game between the Orioles and the Yankees, and a ten inning games between the Twins and Athletics and the Angels and Royals. Moderating those was a five inning tie between the Braves and Reds. Fourteen games to 148 innings for an average of 10.57 innings per game. It was the day for long stays at the ballpark.
