Back to Prime

Tyson Ross pitched a great game against the Diamondbacks Friday night, holding a struggling Diamondbacks offense to one hit in 7 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out 10 as the Padres won 4-1.

Ross turns 31 years old tomorrow. Last night’s game was similar to the middle of his seasonal age 26-28 prime years during which he posted a 3.07 ERA, with 9.2 K per 9 IP, 3.5 walks per 9 IP, and 0.52 HR per 9 IP. The walks were a little high, but with little chance of the ball leaving the park, and a high K rate leading to few hits, it was an acceptable weakness. His ERA was in the top ten in the majors.

Two years of injuries since then limited his playing time. It also, however, gave his arm a rest. While a shoulder injury is never a good thing for a pitcher, it did take some wear and tear off his arm. If the shoulder, after two years, is healthy again, Ross may have another year of prime like performance in his arm. If so, his $1.75 million contract with the Padres will go down as a great signing.
