The Atlanta Braves are off to a terrible start at 0-7. Going into the season, the Braves looked like a poor team, one that lacked both pitching and hitting. So far, that proved correct. The hitters do one thing well, draw walks. Their .302 OBP is nearly 100 points above their .203 BA. Freddie Freeman is the poster child here, as he the opposition refuses to pitch to him. He owns an .095 BA with a .345 OBP.
The Braves and their opposition have walked about the same amount, 33 walks by the Braves pitchers, 32 by the batters. Both sides have hit the same number of doubles, 11. Both sides have struck out in the low 60s. The opposition collected 70 hits to the Braves 46, and outscored them 46 to 22.
That score gap indicates a .130 winning percentage. That’s 30 wins over an entire season. A replacement team, basically calling up the AAA roster, should be able to play about .250 ball. So far, the Braves aren’t coming close to matching that.
The good news is that there is no way the Braves are actually this bad. Balls in play will start finding holes with men on base. The high walk rate means men will be on base. The team will adjust the pitching staff as needed. I suspect some prospects will be coming to the majors a little sooner than expected. No one wants to watch a .130 team.
