True rookie Tyler White leads the majors in batting average this morning, hitting at a .520 clip. Six of his 13 hits went for extra bases, and he also reached base four times by a walk or HBP. In his first week in the majors, he’s doing it all.
That’s one advantage of drafting a mature college player and letting him take a couple of years to develop. He comes to the majors after showing a great ability to get on base at every level of the minors, with some power to boot. I suspect he could have come up at some point in 2015. Instead, he enters the majors in his seasonal age 25 year, meaning he’ll be under team control through his entire prime. If he turns out to be a .280/.350/.450 player, the Astros will reap the best years of his career at a very low cost. Nice job by the Astros of picking him in a late round, and allowing him to develop into a good hitter.
