The Tigers and Marlins play game two of their series Wednesday afternoon as former Marlins pitcher Anibal Sanchez takes on current Marlins ace Jose Fernandez. Sanchez finished 2015 with a 4.99 ERA, the first time he posted a season ERA over four since 2008. He allowed 29 home runs in 157 innings after given up 13 in 308 innings over the previous two seasons. Fernandez returned from Tommy John surgery in 2015 to make eleven starts. He didn’t seem to miss a beat from his 36 pre-injury starts, recording a 2.92 ERA. He did give up hits at a higher rate, however.
Collin McHugh faces Michael Pineda as the Astros and Yankees continue their series in New York. McHugh stands 30-16 with a 3.39 ERA since joining the Astros at the start of 2014. Before that, he went 0-8 with an 8.94 ERA for the Mets and the Rockies. Pineda comes off a mixed 2015. His 156 strikeouts with 21 walks was excellent for 160 2/3 innings, but his 21 homers allowed and 176 hits allowed led to a 4.37 ERA.
Finally, the White Sox try to make it three wins in a row after playing two one-run games with Oakland. Carlos Rodon hurls for Chicago against the Athletics and Sonny Gray. Rodon pitched well in his rookie season, but with a high walk rate. His challenge for 2016 should be to get that rate down. Gray missed his opening day start due to fool poisoning. The White Sox knocked around Gray the two times they saw him.
