A B.J. for the BJs

The Blue Jays acquired Melvin Upton, Jr. and cash from the Padres for minor league right-hander Hansel Rodriguez. The player formerly know as “B.J.” moves to the other dugout as the Padres are playing in Toronto. No doubt the Blue Jays saving air fare played a role in completing the deal. 🙂

Upton’s career somewhat rebounded in San Diego. Upton owns a .323 career OBP, but in his three season before joining the Padres, he did not crack .300. Since the start of 2015, Upton owns a .315 OBP, which is not terrible. He also has a little pop. He gives the Blue Jays depth in case of injury.

Rodriguez is 19 years old and still in rookie ball after three seasons. He has only allowed two home runs in 93 2/3 innings. He’s very young, but at the moment doesn’t look like a great prospect. I just hope the Padres have a Gretel in the organization. 🙂
