The Mets and Cubs continue their series with a great pitching match-up as Noah Syndergaard takes on Jake Arrieta. Syndergaard goes for his 10th win, which would beat his rookie total of nine. In two starts against the Cubs in his short career he struck out 14 in 12 1/3 innings while walking four. Arrieta struggled since losing his win streak, walking 4.1 per nine innings for a 4.81 ERA.
The Dodgers make their way to Washington as Scott Kazmir faces Reynaldo Lopez, making his major league debut. Kazmir’s strikeouts are up this season, but his home runs allowed are up even more. On top of that, six of the 15 HR off him came with men on base. Lopez is a high strikeout, low walk pitcher, coming to the majors at seasonal age 22. He made just two starts at AAA, where opponents were a little tougher on him, drawing six walks in 11 innings and hitting two home runs. Between AA and AAA, however, he is striking out 11.2 batters per nine innings.
Finally, the Rays and Rockies battle as Blake Snell pitches against Tyler Chatwood. Snell is 1-4 despite a 3.69 ERA. He is wild, with 17 walks in 31 2/3 innings in his rookie season, but allowed just one home run. Chatwood brings a 3.29 ERA to the game, but his home/road splits are not in his favor. He owns a 5.32 ERA at Coors this season, where he allowed all six of his home runs.
