Games of the Day

The Cardinals visit the Mets as the start a series important to the wild card race with Carlos Martinez taking on Noah Syndergaard. Martinez is a road a warrior, going 5-1 with a 1.71 ERA away from St. Louis. Only one of the eight home runs against him came in a road game. In a year when home runs are way up, Syndergaard cut way down on allowing the long flies, more than halving his rate. Over 50% of the balls in play against him are on the ground this season.

Houston is one team the Yankees have to pass for a chance at the wild card, and they open a three-game series in Houston. Two good pitchers with high ERAs open, as Michael Pineda faces Dallas Keuchel. For the second year in a row, Pineda gives up a high BABIP, .342 in 2016 after a .332 mark in 2015. That negates the high strikeout rate. It’s not all the Yankees defense, either, as Pineda already allowed 18 home runs. BABIP is the difference between Keuchel’s 2015 and 2016 season, going from .269 to .316. Combined with more walks and home runs, Keuchel’s ERA is through the roof.

Enjoy!
