Bigger Rosters

MLB and the MLBPA are working on a deal to increase rosters from 25 to 26 players in 2020:

As part of the deal, the active limit from Sept. 1 to the end of the season would be lowered from 40 to 28 beginning next year, people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

There would be a maximum of 13 pitchers for most of the season and 14 from Sept. 1 on, the people said. The minimum roster size would increase from 24 to 25.

I’m glad they are forcing teams to add position players, otherwise there would just be another pitcher on the team. This will make it easier to carry a third catcher or a veteran pinch hitter in the NL who can no longer field.

On the other hand, teams might want to decide how to best use their rosters, and a 14 pitcher/12 position player split might be better for some. The deal is not finalized, so it could change before the announcement. Part of the lower September limit is to lower the number of pitching changes.
