With 13 games completed, the majors produced just 81 runs so far on Sunday, 6.23 runs per game. The Giants and Padres will add at least seven to that total, so if the Red Sox and Yankees play a very low scoring game, we could see the lowest scoring day of the season. May 21st produced just 90 runs in 15 games, 6.00 runs per game. It’s actually a low scoring weekend, as Saturday saw the second lowest scoring day of the season at 6.4 runs per game.
There were two 1-0 games on Sunday, the Reds beating the Brewers on a passed ball in the bottom of the ninth, and the Braves beat the Rockies 1-0, as Chase d’Arnaud hit a walk-off single in the ninth.
The Pirates beat the Nationals 2-1 in 18 innings. That was almost a 1-0 win for Pittsburgh, but Daniel Murphy hit a two-out, two-strike, pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Starling Marte homered in the 18th for the Pirates win.
All-in-all, 13 teams scored two runs or less in their games. The best pitching performance so far goes to Jacob deGrom, who held the Phillies to one hit and one walk for a complete game, 5-0 shutout for the Mets.
