David Ortiz may be in trouble for tampering with a potential free agent:
At a press conference during the All-Star break in San Diego, Ortiz had this to say about the Sox lineup after he retires:
“The Red Sox know, also, that they need to bring force into the middle of the lineup. And, sorry Blue Jays, but who better to do that than Encarnacion?”
That’s Edwin Encarnacion of the Blue Jays. That’s breaking this rule:
There shall be no negotiations or dealings respecting employment, either present or prospective, between any player, coach or manager…unless the Club or baseball employer with which the person is connected shall have, in writing, expressly authorized such negotiations or dealings prior to their commencement.
I wonder if the Red Sox could be banned from signing Encarnacion now?
