MLB produced 9.09 runs per game in week 18, down a little from the season average of 9.31 runs per game. If you look at the graph here, week 18 is very consistent across the last three seasons.
Comparing the first 18 weeks of 2016 to 2017, we see that the same number of games were played, 1661. Home runs are up by near 400, 4181 hit in 2017, 3812 hit through 18 weeks of 2016. That works out to 2.52 per game this season versus 2.30 last year. Walks are also up 0.3 per game, strikeouts are up 0.5 per game, but other hits remain down 0.2 per game. So the 0.3 increase in batters reaching base is due to the walks and home runs. That’s been the story all season, more offense, but less action.
