Jake and the Phat Men

The Phillies reached a deal with Jake Arrieta:

Two people familiar with the deal tell The Associated Press that free agent ace Jake Arrieta and the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a three-year deal.

Both people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Sunday because the contract is pending a physical. The deal is reportedly worth $75 million.

The Phillies are paying him as a three-WAR player after a down season. It’s a three-year deal, so it won’t kill the Phillies if Arrieta’s career falls apart. He also gives them a great veteran to lead the staff, while Carlos Santana does the same for the young hitters. It’s a good deal for a maturing team looking to move up.

Note that the sliver lining to this slow off-season is that a number of teams that were young and improving added solid free agents at a good price to give them a boost. I would say that more teams might be competitive this season.
