Stewart Passes

Sammy Stewart died, the Orioles announced today, Saturday:

A native of Asheville, N.C., Stewart made his MLB debut with the Orioles in 1978, striking out seven consecutive batters in his first appearance. Stewart pitched eight seasons in Baltimore, as both a starter and reliever. He led the American League in ERA (2.32) in 1981.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

My first thought was Sammy Stewart was that old? It seems like he wasn’t pitching that long ago. Still 63 is way to young to die in this era.

Stewart’s strength as a pitcher was keeping the ball in the park, but that was offset by a ton of walks. His best season came in the strike-shortened year of 1981, when he managed a 3.3 WAR in just 29 appearances. His 2.32 ERA that season was the only year he came in under 3.00.
