Fixing Richard

The Padres pitching coach got Clayton Richard to buy into changing his release point:

The change involved mostly Richard’s posture but also his arm slot. Richard had previously thrown from the three-quarters angle, but he had dropped down and essentially become a high side-armer after thoracic outlet surgery in 2014. Balsley was asking him to go back.

“If it was a young kid I probably wouldn’t allow it,” Balsley said. “But he’s been around. He knows what’s best for him. He knows what’s best for his career. He’s tinkered throughout the years.”

It took awhile, but Richard pitches today after two good starts in a row. He lasted eight innings in both games, and gave up just one walk over the 16 innings.
