Weekly Look at Offense

Full week eight of the 2018 season was the lowest scoring of the year, with games averaging just 8.43 runs per game. Strikeouts and home runs fell compared to previous weeks. Maybe more batters are trying to put the ball in play?

Compared to the same point in 2017, offense is down. In 2017, games were averaging 9.16 runs per game at this point compared to 8.87 runs per game this season. The big reason is the drop in home runs, from 2.42 per game in 2017 to 2.27 this year. Walks are even, and other hits are down slightly. Despite the drop in strikeouts last week, Ks remain well ahead of 2017, 17.3 per game this season compared to 16.4 through eight weeks last year.
