Games of the Day

The Dodgers visit the Nationals with Ross Stripling taking on Max Scherzer. Stripling split his innings between the bullpen and the rotation this season. As a starter, he brings a 4.05 ERA into the game. In relief, he allowed one run in 15 1/3 innings. He walked more in relief, but didn’t allow a home run. A quarter of the way through the season, Scherzer recorded 91 strikeouts. The last pitcher to record 360+ strikeouts in a season was Randy Johnson, who collected 372 in 2001. It only happened five times since the start of the 20th century.

A battle of first place teams takes place between the Indians and Astros as Mike Clevinger takes on Charlie Morton. Clevinger ranks fourth in the majors in fewest home runs per nine innings pitched with two allowed in 53 1/3 innings. Morton allowed six home runs and 11 total extra-base hits this year, but all 11 came with the bases empty.

Jake Arrieta is also on the list of low home run rates as he leads the Phillies against the Cardinals and Michael Wacha. Arrieta allowed just 30 hits in 41 2/3 innings despite a low strikeout rate. Only 13% of balls in play against Arrieta have been line drives. Batters are putting the ball in play, but with poor contact. Wacha pitched well at home this year, with a 2.25 ERA in five starts. He allowed just one home run in 28 innings in St. Louis.

Enjoy!
