Games of the Day

The Yankees go for a sweep of the Red Sox today. Growing up in the great New York City area and living in Massachusetts for most of my adult life, I’ve seen a lot of games between these two teams. This may be the greatest iteration of the rivalry. Both these teams are young, they have extremely talented players, and they are mentally tough. Both teams use analytics effectively. Most of all, the players on both sides just love playing the game. There is a lot of joy on both sides when they do well, and they never get too down. This is what baseball should be.

Atlanta takes on Miami with Mike Foltynewicz facing Caleb Smith. Foltynewicz is doing well in two of the three three-true outcomes, striking out 43 batters and giving up four home runs in 37 innings. He’s walked 17, however. He only allowed a .236 BA, so the walks have not hurt that much. Smith allowed four home runs and 17 walks in 34 1/3 innings. With 48 K, he allowed a .184 BA.

The Cardinals send Miles Mikolas against the Padres and Jordan Lyles. Mikolas comes into the game undefeated, 4-0 in six starts. He walked just two batters in 40 innings, by far the best control in the majors. Lyles makes his first start of the season after 13 relief appearances. He’s walking a few batters, but his .194/.275/.319 opposition slash line is still excellent.

Enjoy!
