Team Offense, Colorado Rockies

The 2019 series on team offense continues with the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies finished seventh in the majors and second in the National League in 2018 with 4.79 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Bud Black order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

  • Best lineup: 5.18
  • Probable lineup: 4.97
  • Worst lineup: 4.58
  • Regressed lineup: 4.58

Rookie Garrett Hampson was an on-base machine in the minors, and drew seven walks in 48 plate appearance during his cup of coffee in the majors. If he keeps that up he’ll certainly bat higher in the order. It actually would make sense for the Rockies to bat him ninth. That way, he can show he can get on base without the pressure of being the actual lead-off man. That’s how Derek Jeter started.

A successful rookie season by Hampson would give the Rockies six very good hitters. Daniel Murphy is a nice addition to either the top or the middle of the order. His ability to hit the gaps should up his number of doubles. He and Blackmon should provide Nolan Arenado not only with baserunners, but plenty of men in scoring position. Don’t be surprised to see Arenado post a very high number of RBI this season.
