Shifting Early

The Rays are in full shift mode early in spring training, as they used the defense against Hyun Soo Kim, who spent his career until this point playing in South Korea:

Even though Kim is new to the major leagues, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said other teams have undoubtedly done their homework on him. Teams have scouts in South Korea.

But Showalter believes Kim will make the necessary adjustments if he continues to be shifted, especially since he’s not exclusively a pull hitter.

I’m impressed that the Rays already figured the odds of Kim pulling the ball. Asian teams getting scouted by the US should encourage all players there to perform better. As the far east develops better players, the chance for an expanded, world-wide major league goes up.
