The Age of the Tigers

Drew Sharp perceives a huge split in the Tigers squad along the age axis:

March baseball is all about snapshots. Little glimpses that potentially offer big clues as to where a team’s headed once the real games start in April.

It’s already pretty clear after one game. The Detroit Tigers are two different teams. The one with the core veterans confident they could successfully rebound from last year’s last-place finish provided, of course, they stay healthy. And the one with the green prospects who could be as much as two years from contributing at the major league level.

STATS, Inc., lists a 37-man MLB roster for the Tigers right now. Of those, 18 were born from 1990 forward, and are youngish, 8 were born in 1984 or before, and are definitely past prime. That gives them 11 players right in the middle. That seems like a good distribution. Despite all the effort put into winning a championship with older players, their replacements may be poised to take over without the Tigers losing a lot of wins. The next two seasons will show if the quality is there.
