Johnny Cueto pitched a gem Wednesday night, holding the Rockies to five hits, one walk, and one run in a complete game. The Giants won 5-1 to put Cueto’s record at 13-1 with a 2.47 ERA. With Clayton Kershaw out with an injury, Cueto and his teammate, Madison Bumgarner gained in Tom Tango Cy Young Tracker points. Both pitchers are now less than eight points behind Kershaw. The two Giants are separated by just 0.3 points. Bumgarner wins strikeouts and Earned runs, Cueto wins innings and wins. The two are potent 1-2 punch for San Francisco, and a big reason the Giants are in first place in the NL West.
Doctors cleared Kershaw to play catch, but there is still no clear return date. The NL Cy Young race may wind up interesting after all.
