The Mets send Jacob deGrom against the Phillies and Zach Eflin. The Mets did a poor job supporting deGrom in June, scoring just three runs in his five starts. That’s why he owns a 2.61 ERA and a 5-4 record. Eflin tries to work his magic. He is a great control artist, with just six walks in 35 1/3 innings. He is, however, hittable in the strike zone as he only K’d 18, allowing five home runs.
Cole Hamels faces John Lackey as the Cubs go for a sweep of the Rangers. Hamels owns a 2.18 career ERA at Wrigley Field, his only poor outing being his first one. He’s walked six and struck out 33 in 33 innings. This is a better Cubs team than he faced in the past, however. Lackey’s ERA is over two runs better at home than on the road this season, but his three-true outcomes are not very different. He just gives up more hits on the road.
Finally, the Red Sox try to put the final nail in the Yankees coffin as David Price takes on Masahiro Tanaka. If the Yankees swept the Red Sox to start the second half, they would have a legitimate shot at the playoffs. Losing at least two of three, however, shows that New York is better off using their old stars and extra bullpen closers to try to gain prospects. Price went into the All-Star break with eight shutout innings, but more importantly walked one and struck out ten in each of his last three starts. Most of the power against Tanaka comes with men on base, doing plenty of damage and neutralizing his .279 OBP allowed.
Enjoy!
