Adam Wainwright pitched a three-hit shutout Saturday night as the Cardinals defeated the Marlins 5-0. After a rough start to the season, Wainwright pitched just one poor start since the beginning of June. Most tellingly, his strikeout rate is back up to the level of his Cy Young candidacy seasons, and he has not allowed a home run in that stretch. For the season, his home run rate is right in line with his career numbers, so those eight homers in his first 64 2/3 innings really hurt him. I’ll speculate that it took a lot longer to completely recover from his 2015 injury than expected. He could pitch, but it took a long time at seasonal age 34 to find his groove again.
