Games of the Day

The Rangers continue their series with the Red Sox as A.J. Griffin takes on David Price. Griffin slipped nicely into the Rangers rotation after missing all of 2014 with Tommy John surgery, and just pitching briefly in the minors in 2015. His high strikeout rate helped him to a 2.93 ERA so far in 43 innings of work. Price is part of a Boston rotation with a 6.04 ERA in their last 18 starts, Price making two poor starts himself in that span. The big problem is 17 home runs allowed in just 95 1/3 innings.

The Mariners and Astros continue to battle for second place in the division and a possible wild card berth. Taijuan Walker faces Dallas Keuchel. Walker allowed 15 home runs in 82 innings, but just 17 walks. With a low hit rate, 11 of the 15 homers were solo shots. Keuchel’s walk and home run rates nearly doubled compared to 2015, one reason he comes into the game with a 5.13 ERA. The Astros won his last two starts in blow outs, so the three home runs and five walks in 12 1/3 innings didn’t hurt that much.

The Orioles try to even the series with the Dodgers as Chris Tillman faces Kenta Maeda. A Tillman win tonight would equal his win total from 2015 of 11, with nine fewer losses. His strikeout rate is way up, and his opposition batting average is down. Maeda is 0-1 in two starts against AL teams with a 5.40 ERA. He walked six in ten innings. Against NL teams he walked 22 in 82 2/3 innings.

Finally, the Rockies visit the Giants with Tyler Chatwood battling Madison Bumgarner. Chatwood manages to limit both hits and home runs while playing with Coors Field as a home park. He is 5-0 with a 1.25 ERA on the road, and all six homers allowed came at home. Bumgarner has trouble with the Rockies at home. In his career, he is 5-5 with a 4.00 ERA in that situation. The Rockies manage to put the ball in play and collect some hits.

Enjoy!
