Painting Human Flesh - Stage-by-Stage

Stage-by-Stage Guide to painting Human Flesh.

This week I wanted to post some stage-by-stage guides for painting flesh.  The tone I wanted to go for is towards the pink-hue, and uses the Army Painter equivalent of old Games Workshop Dwarf Flesh and Elf Flesh.

Setup - Priming.
The model was primed with Halfords Red Plastic Paint (for those of you who are not in the UK, you may be able to get a red plastic primer in your local hardware store).

Stage 1: To achieve an even colour, two (slightly) watered down coats were applied.

Stage 2: Chestnut Ink Wash (Neat) applied to all flesh areas.

Stage 3: Pick out the first stage highlights with the base colour.

Stage 4: Pick out the first areas with the highlight colour - this can be a 50/50 mix if you wanted to cut out one stage.

Stage 5: Pick out the next areas with the highlight colour - this can be a 50/50 mix if you wanted to cut out one stage.

Stage 6: Pick out the extreme highlights with the final colour.

This is just one example of painting human flesh.  There are a multitude of flesh tones and inks/shades out there which will give you different results, but the six steps above (of 5, if you decide to go with a 50/50 shade) will help you achieve a decent tabletop/gaming standard for your miniatures.
