Two Man Race

According to Tom Tango Cy Young Tracker points, the race for the AL Cy Young Award is a close contest between Chris Sale of the White Sox and Danny Salazar of the Indians. Salazar started a rain delayed game Monday against the Tigers, a game the Indians won late 5-3. Salazar allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out six. That didn’t help him much in points, as he remains two points behind Sale. Sale has the advantage in wins and innings, have thrown 21 more innings than Salazar. Salazar has the advantage in earned runs and strikeouts, have struck out just five fewer batters than Sale in many fewer opportunities. If Sale ends up winning about 24 games, I think he’ll get the award if his ERA is anywhere near Salazar’s. That many wins will be tough for the writers to ignore. If the Indians win the division and Salazar leads the league in ERA, it will be a very close vote.
