Offense went literally off the chart last week, as the majors saw scoring of 10.49 runs per game for the seven day period. This was the highest scoring week since the end of the 2009 season, the last time scoring was over 10 runs a game for a week.
Year over year, the majors are now producing 8.99 runs per game compared to 8.23 runs per game at the same time last season. There is one more batter reaching base per game this season, 0.4 more home runs per game, and 0.5 more walks per game (versus the same point last year. The 2015 season still produced more non-home run hits, but it’s very close. The extra walks and home runs make up the difference.
This is why I really don’t worry about the state of the game in terms of scoring. There are high scoring periods in which teams develop pitching, which leads to low scoring periods when teams develop offense. Looks like the pendulum is swinging back to offense.
