Redefining the Rob Deer Hitter

Joey Gallo hit his 13th home run of the season as the Rangers lead the Tigers 5-2 in the eighth inning. Gallo now owns the unusual slash line of .190/.306/.518. Home runs account for half his hits, and 18 of his 26 hits have gone for extra bases. He walks a good amount, so his OBP isn’t horrible, but he strikes out so much, 63 times in 137 at bats that his batting average is just terrible.

Gallo produces, however. If a batter is going to do one thing really well, hitting home runs should be that skill. Add in the walks, and a team will tolerate the strikeouts. It’s going to be fun to watch how high his K and HR totals can go this year.
