Priming the Pump

Avisail Garcia went four for five with two home runs and two doubles to lead the White Sox in a 16-1 rout of the Seattle Mariners. He scored three times and drove in six runs. His outstanding night at the plate took place in a breakout year for the outfielder, as he now owns a .357/.400/.610 slash line. This was after compiling a .258/.310/.385 slash line during the first five seasons of his career. That’s quite a jump, but at seasonal age 26, still early in his prime, it’s a good point to make that jump.

Will this level of play last? There is little in his career in the major or the minors to lead us to believe so. This season is most like his time at AAA, where in 255 PA he posted a .367/.412/.532 slash line. Garcia came up at a young age, 21, so it’s possible he was rushed to the majors before he fully developed. He first made it to AAA in 2013, after he had gotten a taste of the majors. Every time he went down, he showed that he did not belong there. Maybe, with all the injuries to starting pitchers this season, he’s getting to see the pitchers he knocked around in the minors. This article suggests it’s a better mental approach, as he learned not to get too high or too low with his success and failures. We will see.
