The Return of Gerrit Cole

Gerrit Cole pitched a gem against the Nationals Wednesday night, allowing three hits and one run in seven innings of work. It was his eighth quality start in a row, and his fourth high quality start in his last five games. Opponents hit Cole hard in his first two starts. Fifteen of his 46 hits and three of his seven home runs allowed came in his first 11 innings. He lowered his ERA every start since, and now it stands at a very respectable 2.84. Cole appears to have recovered from his 2016 injuries and is once again the Pirates ace.

Batters are hitting very few line drives against Cole. He appears to have changed his pitch mix, throwing more change-ups and fewer four-seam fastballs. So far, so good.
