Games of the Day

The Rangers go for their 11th win in a row as they send A.J. Griffin against Justin Verlander. Texas gained just two games in the division, as the Astros are 8-2 in their last ten games. Griffin owns a low ERA, 3.15, despite allowing seven home runs in 34 1/3 innings. Five of those came in 8 1/3 innings at his home park. He allowed just two on the road, where his ERA sits at 1.38. Verlander’s ERA jumped nearly 1.5 runs compared to last season, thanks in part to a doubling of his walk rate.

The slugfest of the day is set for Baltimore, where Mike Bolsinger of the Blue Jays faces Kevin Gausman of the Orioles. Bolsinger owns a 6.10 ERA in 10 1/3 innings of work, despite not allowing a home run. Batters are 5 for 7 against him with runners in scoring position. For his career, he allowed a .297/.354/.484 slash line with RISP. Gausman gives up hits, home runs, and walks at a high rate, leading to his 7.19 ERA.

Finally, Dan Straily takes on Julio Urias in Los Angeles as the Marlins play the Dodgers. Straily is tough to hit, holding batters to a .160 BA this season. He walks people, however, and three of his five home runs allowed came with men on base. Urias walked 11 and struck out 11 in 21 innings. He’s better than that, and it’s early enough in his season that those numbers have not haunted him.

Enjoy!
