Game one of the split admission double header between the Phillies and the Nationals features veterans Jeremy Hellickson and Gio Gonzalez. Hellickson, when successful, allows the ball to be put in play and his fielders to do the dirty work. He’s doing so again this season, with eight strikeouts and 17 walks in 38 2/3 innings. This does lead to home runs (7 this season), but few other hits. Gonzalez owns a 2.64 ERA and an FIP of 4.98. He is walking a lot of batters and giving up too many home runs, but this is balanced by an opponents BABIP of .248. If you are in a fantasy league, Gonzalez might be someone you want to sell high.
I never thought I would write this, but Jake Arrieta versus Adam Wainwright might be the slugfest of the day. Arrieta comes in with a 5.35 ERA, Wainwright at 6.37.
The Athletics and Rangers present another good match-up as Kendall Graveman tries to bury A.J. Griffin. Graveman beat the Rangers once this year, allowing one run in seven innings as he walked one and struck out five. Griffin is 4-0 in five starts with just six walks in 29 1/3 innings. He allowed four home runs, but just 19 hits in total.
Finally, the Dodgers try to take three out of four from the Rockies as Julio Urias faces rookie Antonio Senzatela. Urias impressed at seasonal age 19 in 2016, and owns a 1.06 ERA through three starts this season. That despite walking and striking out 10 in 17 innings. He has yet to allow a home run this year, and the high walk total is balanced by just nine hits allowed. Senzatela plays 2017 as a 22-year-old. With seven walks and 13 K in 26 innings at Coors, he managed to allow just 21 hits, good for a 3.12 ERA at his home park. If he can keep that up for a season, he might deserved the Cy Young Award!
Enjoy!
