Wednesday starts with a couple of noon games, the best of the two pits the Astros against the Marlins. Lance McCullers, Jr. takes on José Ureña. McCullers showed great control so far, striking out 57 and walking 13 in 48 1/3 innings. Urena, a right-hander, has been tough on left-handed hitters this season, holding them to 8 for 48.
The later afternoon games offer a battle of veteran aces as Clayton Kershaw leads the Dodgers against Johnny Cueto and the Giants. Since the start of the 2009 season, Kershaw’s second year, he is just blowing away the majors in ERA. He leads second place Felix Hernandez by almost 0.7 runs. Cueto ranks seventh on that list, just 0.14 runs behind the second place pitcher. Other than Kershaw, it is a very close field.
The eight o’clock eastern hour features the Yankees against the Royals with Michael Pineda facing MLB ERA leader Jason Vargas. Pineda gave up more home runs than walks this season, eight HR and just six BB. With the low walks and high Ks, seven of those eight homers were solo shots. Vargas allowed just one home run to go with his low walk total of eight. Batters are just 3 for 21 against with runners in scoring position.
Enjoy!
