Weekly Look at Offense

The 2017 season continues to run well ahead of the 2016 season at the same point in time. The current season produces 9.01 runs per game, while 2016 produced 8.61 runs per game through the same point in time. Again, through six weeks of the season 2017 is seeing 0.2 more home runs per game, 0.3 more walks per game, but 0.3 less other hits. Overall, that 0.2 more batters reaching by a hit, walk, or hit by pitch.

The last bit about fewer other his is likely due to the 0.3 per game increase in strikeouts. Batters are swinging for the fences, producing more runs, but striking out more often.

You can see a chart of run scoring by week since 2015 on this Google spreadsheet.

Bu the way, intentional walks are down ever so slightly, 0.37 per game this year, 0.38 through six weeks last season.
