Children’s Books

Sports Illustrated Kids releases two books for children on April 5, 2016. My First Book of Baseball teaches very young children the basics of the game in a fun way.

You can read it to your three-year-old, or your six-year-old can enjoy it solo. The book is divided into nine innings, each giving a simplified lesson in a different area of the game. It starts with the batter-pitcher match-up, and ends with a complicated and heroic finish to the game. Along the way, children are introduced to some of the best players in the game today. It’s a nice primer to get your youngster interested in the game.

For older children, SI Kids offers Baseball Then to Wow!

This book teach young readers a bit of the history of the game through timelines and then and now comparisons. One of the best time lines shows the evolution of the glove. It starts with what looks like a bicycling glove, and goes up today’s custom models. There’s also a great then and now comparing the composition of the pitching staff. It compares the 1884 Providence Grays, with Old Hoss Radbourn starting 73 of 112 games, to today’s staff of five staters and seven bullpen specialists.

You child will learn something about history, strategy, and most importantly, how the game changed throughout it’s existence.
