Matt Harvey decided to have surgery sooner than later:
The New York Mets right-hander will have season-ending surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, the team announced Friday.
“Terry [Collins] and I met with Matt today and although we all feel badly for him, we expressed our support in this decision and know he will work as hard as possible to get back on the field for the 2017 season,” Mets GM Sandy Alderson said in a statement.
This may not be that bad for the Mets. Harvey was 4-10 in his 17 starts with a high ERA. He was pitching more like a fourth or fifth starter than an ace. The Mets might not get better with Harvey’s replacement, but they are unlikely to be much worse.
Long term is a different story. Harvey probably won’t do that well in arbitration, and his future big free agent payoff is in jeopardy as well. The Mets have a number of potential aces, however, which helps the future look brighter.
