The best game of the afternoon features Mike Montgomery of the Cubs pitching in San Francisco against Johnny Cueto. Montgomery is testing the positive limits of pitching to contact. He struck out just 47 batters in 71 innings, but allowed just 64 hits. For the third year in a row, Montgomery induces a very low BABIP, giving him a career .268 number. Cueto makes just his seventh start of the season. He’s walked eight and struck out 28 in 37 innings.
The Athletics and Astros play game three of their four-game series with Chris Bassitt hounding Lance McCullers, Jr. Bassitt pitched 27 innings so far this season, one fewer than his 2017 campaign. He allowed five home runs in 2017, just one this year. McCullers is 4-1 at home with a 2.47 ERA. He allowed just three home runs in 51 innings in Houston.
