Games of the Day

Matt Harvey returns to the mound for the Mets as baseball returns to Houston in game one of a double header. The Astros send Charlie Morton to the mound. Harvey returns from a shoulder injury. He allowed 35 walks and 16 home runs in 70 1/3 innings this season, helping him to a 5.25 ERA. Morton greatly upped his strikeout rate over the last two seasons, 9.9 K per 9 IP compared to 6.8 K per 9 IP for his career.

The Nationals try to take a game from the Brewers as Max Scherzer faces Brandon Woodruff. Scherzer recorded ten times more strikeouts than home runs, 2111 K, 211 HR. I don’t think it’s that special, but it is an interesting coincidence of the numbers. Woodruff has been effectively wild in his first three MLB starts. He walked eight in 16 2/3 innings, but allowed just one home run. Batters are 2 for 17 against him with runners in scoring position.

The Rockies keep slipping toward an epic Wild Card collapse as Arizona send Patrick Corbin against Jon Gray. The Rockies lead for the second slot is down to 1 1/2 games over the Brewers. Corbin pitched poorly on the road this season, 4-8 with a 5.38 ERA, and allowed 17 of his 23 home runs away from Arizona. Gray is undefeated at Coors Field this season, 4-0 in five starts with a 3.00 ERA. He allowed just two home runs there in 30 innings.

Enjoy!
