I really think this headline is rather humorous:
Mets’ David Wright scheduled to undergo season-ending rotator cuff surgery
Here is David Wright’s game log for 2017. When, exactly, did his season begin?
A more appropriate headline might read, “Rotator cuff surgery puts the final nail in the coffin of David Wright’s career.”
Wright was a great players, and I know that he is extremely competitive and does not want to give up playing. He is signed through 2020, and he is likely one of those people who wants to live up to his contract. But he played 150 games once in the last seven seasons. If he comes back, he probably won’t be able to start every day, and likely won’t be able to make the long throws from first base. He may need to take the Ed Kranepool/Rusty Staub role as a pinch hitter and team leader. It tough to imagine him being very good as an everyday player again.
