The Mariners and Twins finish up their series with Ariel Miranda facing Jose Berrios (whose nickname should be “Boo“). Miranda’s weak spot in his short career is the home run, as he allowed 23 long balls in just 131 2/3 innings. That makes his 3.67 career ERA a bit more impressive, as 30 of the 58 runs scored against him came on home runs. Berrios pitched lights out since joining the Twins rotation in mid-May. His low ERA comes from an excellent strikeout rate leading to few hits allowed.
The slumping Nationals travel to Queens to take on the relatively hot Mets. A sweep by the Mets would make the NL East competitive again. Game one features Gio Gonzalez against Robert Gsellman. Gonzalez allowed seven home runs in 35 May innings, but has yet to give up a home run in 12 June innings. Since returning to the rotation from the bullpen, Gsellman made four good starts. He allowed just two home runs and seven walks in those 25 innings.
Enjoy!
