Paxton Pickled by Pec

The Mariners lose James Paxton for at least three weeks due to a pectoral muscle injury:

Paxton was optimistic it was a minor injury, but an MRI on Friday morning confirmed a stint on the disabled list and another blow for the Mariners’ postseason chances.

Paxton was working his way into the conversation for Cy Young Award consideration. He was the AL pitcher of the month in July and had won seven straight starts heading into Thursday’s outing. He wound up with a no-decision. Paxton is 12-3 with a 2.78 ERA in 20 starts.

Paxton was easily pitching the best season of his career, half a run better than his career ERA. For the first time in a single season he was striking out more batters than innings pitched, and he was doing a great job preventing home runs in a season with home runs up across the majors. Those will be tough shoes to fill, and likely the offense will need to step up to support his replacement. He joins Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma, and Drew Smyly as four fifths of the rotation is out of action.
